Behind The Lens

Location

It was taken in Huntington Central Park, Orange County, CA.

Time

Around 7 am.

Lighting

The pond where this snowy egret was catching fish is very shaded. The high contrast white feather of the snowy egret stood out against both the dark background and dark water.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 7D Mark II and an 70-200 Canon L II lens.

Inspiration

I love the light and contrast between the bird and background.

Editing

Contrast of the photo was reduced.

In my camera bag

For wildlife, I use the 7D Mark II and the 100-400 lens; for everything else, I take a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV with a 24-105 and either a 16-35 or 70-200. I travel light - Canon EOS M.

Feedback

One has to spend time to learn behaviors of the animal one is shooting. This egret fishes at the same place every year for a couple weeks until the fish population is too low. I was at the pond every morning at sunrise for two weeks watching and shooting until I got the best time, light, angles, and timing. Aim for shots when the bird is coming at you. Watch for wing positions. This one has the umbrella-look that I like. Keep clicking.
