During my recent visit to the Central Park Zoo, I spotted this red-and-green Macaw dozing off while perched on a branch. This image was taken inside the "Tropic zone: The Rainforest" exhibit at the zoo. There is a startling variety of animals here, from the forest floor to the canopy, including a wide range of tropical birds.
The red-and-green macaw, also known as the green-winged macaw, is a large, mostly-red macaw of the genus Ara. This is the largest of the genus Ara, widespread in the forests and woodlands of northern and central South America. The green-winged macaw has characteristic red lines around the eyes formed by rows of tiny feathers on the otherwise bare white skin patch.
