Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the World of Birds exhibit located at the Bronx Zoo.

Time

I took this photo in the late morning as we were visiting different indoor exhibits inside de Zoo as part of a photography workshop.

Lighting

This Victoria Crowned pigeons was perched in a branch that happened to have some great light and also a beautiful orange (monochrome) background. This provided good natural light for the portrait and also great contrasting color with the warm tones in the background.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D5600 camera handheld along with my Tamron 18-400mm super zoom lens at almost full length and widest aperture, in order to capture the portrait of the pigeon without use of flash.

Inspiration

The Victoria crowned pigeon is a large, bluish-grey pigeon with very elegant blue lace-like crests, maroon breast, and red irises. They are extremely rare ro spit in the wild, as they are part of a genus of four unique, very large, ground-dwelling pigeons native to the New Guinea region. The still pose of the pigeon while perching on the branch allowed me the opportunity to capture several close portrait shots. Thi way we can appreciate the beautiful details of this unique pigeon.

Editing

I used Luminar 4 ro do some simple post-processing on this image. The editing basically consisted of enhancing the color, contrast, adjusting light a bit, a touch of denoise and details.

In my camera bag

I carry my newer Nikon D7500 DSLR, with my Tamron 18-400mm zoom lens, my Nikkor 10-20mm wide angle lens and a Nikkor 35mm prime lens. I carry a mini tripod, and a kit with different filters.

Feedback

Bring a slow zoom lens (example, a 10-400mm zoom lens) and, if possible, a monopod to take shots inside zoo exhibits, as the light can be limited.
