Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on my way home from work as a rainstorm cleared just in time for the sunset. I'll take the backway home on beautiful days like this looking for opportunities to catch something great. I'd driven past this abandoned old home on the road and wanted to stop for months but with the lighting and fog rising over the field, I couldn't wait another day. This is located near Auburn, WA near the Green River.

Time

Dusk was hitting so timewise it was about 6:30 PM right as the fall colors start to decorate the Pacific Northwest.

Lighting

The natural lighting was incredible that day. The clouds had cleared from the west making a perfect sunset, however the storm had moved east towards the Cascade Mountains which led to this perfect juxtaposition in the ambiance. In addition, there happened to be a beautiful rainbow over the field but I couldn't quite get it right with the composition of this old doghouse. In the end though, I think the shot was better for it.

Equipment

I used my Canon RP with a 24-105 4-7.1 Kit lens. The shot was handheld, no other gear other than a lens hood.

Inspiration

I'd been eyeing this spot for months just waiting for the right opportunity, I finally got the right light to make it happen.

Editing

Yeah, I focused my post-processing on raising the shadows and focusing on color grading to really bring out the diverse color in the shot and to balance out the clouds with the doghouse.

In my camera bag

Typically, I have my RP, my kit lens, my nifty fifty and an 85 MM 2.0 Macro RF lens.

Feedback

Be persistent and take advantage of the opportunity when the right light comes your way!
