Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Buachaille Etive Mòr in the Scottish Highlands

Time

Anticipating a colourful sunset, I made my way to this location in the early evening and planned my composition as I waited for the sun to set.

Lighting

I often see this popular location photographed in winter and surrounded in morning mist. I decided I wanted to do something a little differently and opted for the warm glow of a summer’s evening. Who knew Scotland would be such a great place for a summer holiday?!

Equipment

I used a Sony A7RIII with the Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 lens for the seriously wide angle of view. I also used a Gitzo ball head on a Manfrotto carbon fibre tripod. Oh, and a remote shutter release to avoid any unwanted camera shakes.

Inspiration

I was just really blown away by the Scottish highlands at this time of year. There were incredible colours everywhere and the setting sun just brought it all to life even more. Admittedly, I would never have considered travelling here in summer prior to Covid- 19 travel restrictions.

Editing

I used Adobe Lightroom Classic, nothing else. I exposed for the sky and subsequently increased the shadows to bring out the detail in the foreground. I didn’t make any major adjustments, with the exception of some white balance adjustments and tonal changes to boost the clarity and contrast.

In my camera bag

I normally carry a full frame camera body, an ultra-wide zoom lens and a longer prime lens. I also frequently carry ND filters and plenty of lens cleaning accessories.

Feedback

I think it’s important to arrive at your destination early for planning. The mistake a have made most commonly in the past is arriving at a beautiful location with only minutes to spare until the lighting is exactly as I’d like it. For me, it’s really important to allow time for perfecting your composition and knowing exactly what the visual message is you want to capture and depict.
