Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Kimmeridge Bay in Dorset on a summer’s evening.

Time

This was taken at sunset. Although the colours were fairly vibrant, I opted to go with black and white to depict a moody atmosphere.

Lighting

The sun was setting to the right side of the frame. I feel the side lighting helped to create nice contrast on the rocks in the foreground.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D Mark IV with the Canon 16-35 L f/4 lens.

Inspiration

I had previously visited this location and just knew I wanted to go back during sunset for some soft lighting.

Editing

I used Adobe Lightroom. Firstly, I converted to black and white, before increasing contrast and making tonal adjustments.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a full frame camera, a wide angle lens and a prime with a longer focal length. I often use ND filters for long exposures and I occasionally but rarely use a polarising filter.

Feedback

Don’t be afraid to consider black and white landscape images when shooting at sunrise or sunset. Sometimes it just works better!
