Behind The Lens

Location

Shot taken at Djuma Private Game Reserve, Sabi Sands, South Africa

Time

This was taken on a bright, but early morning at about 7AM

Lighting

The sky was very blue but the light was still not bright. I show this at 1600 in order to also have a very fast shutter speed.

Equipment

Canon 7D II, Canon 400 DO with 1.4x hand held

Inspiration

Taking photos of birds is a challenge. Taking photos of birds is a challenge mixed with luck that you even have the opportunity. The bird was sitting on the branch and I was taking shots when it decided to take off.

Editing

I shoot in raw so there is always post processing. This is almost a full frame photo with minor cropping with work on levels and contrast.

In my camera bag

On this trip I had a Canon R5, Canon 7D II, Canon 90D along with Canon 100-500L, 400 DO with 1.4x and 70-200 L III 2.8

Feedback

Birding is a challenge and to some degree it is a numbers game. The more shots you take, the more chance for success. However if you plan to capture birds in flight, make sure your ISO is set high enough to be able to use a fast shutter speed, otherwise all you get is a blurred bird.
