The photo was taken at Lion Sands Reserve, Sabi Sands, South AfricaTime
The shot was taken 9/7/2010 in the the late afternoon, around 4 PMLighting
The kudu was standing in the shade, so I had to use unusually high ISO to get a good shutter speed combined with a greater field of focusEquipment
I used a Canon 1Ds Mark III with a Canon 100-400L at 350mm lens, The shot was taken hand held.Inspiration
Kudus are usually very shy antelopes and its rare to get one close enough to take a great shot like this. She was more curious than most and was a bit interested in the vehicle I was sitting in.Editing
Basic post processing was done, minor working with contrast and sharpening as I shoot in raw. No cropping was done on this shot, it is full frame. In my camera bag
When I am safari, I carry 3 cameras. I now have the Canon 5D III, Canon 7D II and 7D. On the 7DII I have a Canon 400 DO with 1.4x and the 7D's I have the 100-400L and 70-200 2.8 II. In my back I also have a 100 2.8 Macro and a 17-40L which I rarely use. For walking around I also have a 70-300L which is much smaller and lighter to carry.Feedback
Be patient. Spend a lot of time being with animals and do not rush off in search of something better. Take LOTS of shots, you never know which one might be a winner. With animals, focus on the eyes if you can, or if they are farther away, center mass making sure you have a small enough fstop to get everything in focus.
