Location
I met up with the model in my studio in Rijswijk, near The Hague, Netherlands. It is an ex-office floor (with all the charme and lack thereof...), but it was the perfect place for the shoot.Time
We had the session on an early evening in April. The studio is difficult to heat, Sarah Brown (@run_into_thewoods) did a great job.Lighting
In my experience, the creation of a composition like this one is made easier by a flat lighting. I used two softboxes camera left and right respectively.Equipment
The shot was taken with a Nikon D800 with a Nikkor 85mm on a sturdy tripod. The two studio flashes were Godox QT600, fired by a radio trigger. A black cloth helped creating the dark background. The camera was attached to a remote shutter release.Inspiration
Inspiration came from a similar photo by Viewbug photographer Ashitaro (viewbug.com/member/Ashitaro), check out her portfolio.Editing
Obviously, there's some serious editing involved. A first picture of Sarah was taken without the hands. Numerous further shots were taken with hands in the various positions while the model holds (in as far as possible) the exact position. Parts of the later photos were then over-imposed on the first portrait. I increased clarity on the hands, giving them a rougher look.In my camera bag
It really depends... For a studio shoot I typically carry a Nikon D800, some lenses (Samyang 14mm, Nikkor 85mm, Tamron 70-200mm), radio-trigger, batteries, remote shutter release, model release. Last not least the studio flashes, typically Godox QT600.Feedback
For this specific shoot, the model was supposed to bring her own hand-model, but that person couldn't come. In the end we used a remote release that the model held. The hands are mine... Be nice and respectful towards your model, explain the setup and what's going to happen. Have fun!
