Location
I took this photo in the harbour of the little island of Lampedusa (Sicily, Italy), well known for being a migrants’ arrival spot, as it is the Italian territory which is closest to North Africa and namely Libya.Time
It was afternoon.Lighting
Light conditions were rather difficult: it was a sunny August day but there was a tent over the heads of the main subjects. This was is not visible in the picture, but it represented a challenge.Equipment
I used my good old Nikon 77, without tripod or flash, just the camera. Then scanned the picture.Inspiration
The scene around these three boys was filled with anxiety: a full boat of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa had just disembarked, doctors were checking the health of the ones not feeling well and the police was trying to identify the smugglers. In this frame, these three boys looked so happy to have arrived, so full of hope, and when we crossed our eyes they did this great smile and spontaneously posed for the picture. I thought one has a great heart if happiness manages to get out despite the hard times.Editing
No post processing at all, just a minor adjustment of contrast. In my camera bag
This was one of the last pictures I took with my old Nikon 77, cause the seaside air made some jokes to the shutter. The year after I bought my Canon 550D.Feedback
Go where things happen, observe and try to catch humanity. That’s the only advice I can give.
