Behind The Lens

Location

The model and I met at a beach...not secluded, but due to the time of day, we had the beach to ourselves. I'm up the beach, slightly elevated and she's down on the shore.

Time

This was shot at the beach in the late afternoon. The sun had dipped below the hill behind me, but it was still a couple of hours before sunset. .

Lighting

The light was diffused by smoke from a distant fire and gave us some eerie colours, but overall it enhanced the quality of light

Equipment

I used a Canon 1D mark 3 with a Canon 100-400 f4.5-f5.6 IS USM lens, 400mm @ 5.6 200 ISO, 1/320 sec hand held

Inspiration

Having a great model and a great location, it's hard not to capture great images! I have always liked the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit pics and the effect that long lenses and shallow depth of field offer...I think this goes close to what I that style.

Editing

I use Lightroom for most of my processing and always shoot RAW. My reasoning is that if you have the opportunity to capture an image, capture the best/biggest possible file you possibly can. Editing can change the mood of a photo so much, therefore being able to do non destructive editing and being able to back track every step of the way, right back to the original file without losing any pixels, is the only way to go...I also have a B+W copy of this that I quite like. I always make WB adjustments, sharpen a little, slight vibrance and contrast enhancements and I believe I have done some skin softening in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I have a Canon 6d mark 2 and a Canon 1D mark 3. I use Canon lenses mostly and have a 50mm f1.2, a 24-105 f4, a 100 f2.8 a 16-35 f2.8, a 2X convertor. I sold the Canon 100-400 and got a behemoth Sigma 150-300 f2.8...I've always wanted a 300 f2.8 lens, but could never justify the cost of it, so I got the Sigma, which has the added advantage of the zoom with a constant f2.8...but it's pretty impossible to use without at least a monopod!

Feedback

Go out and just shoot! Wherever you get your inspiration, try and see how it was done and see if you can do the same. If using a model, make sure you're both trying to capture the same thing so you can get a reasonably predictable result...but while you're at it, make sure you shoot the s#%t out of it so you can get something a bit different for both of you.
