Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in my home studio using artificial light...a strobe shot through a difuser

Time

It was a fairly miserable day outside and when the model and MUA arrived in the late afternoon, it was quite cold...but shooting indoors makes shooting anytime a bit of a breeze.

Lighting

I tend to look for bargain 2nd hand lighting, as I don't need the latest and greatest technology to get the results I seek. I mostly shoot on manual and light is everywhere, it's a matter of manipulating it to suit your needs. I often make my own light shaping tools as well (because I think some of them are ridiculously expensive for what they are!). This item was a large sheet of diffusion material clipped to a frame made of electrical conduit!

Equipment

I have Canon equipment. The most important thing for me is sensor quality, so I use a full frame camera. To get the best quality image, the glass is key, so I use the best quality lenses I can get hold of. I think this was a 50mm f1.2

Inspiration

I love to capture beauty in an understated way without too much clutter. I use the K.I.S.S principal...Keep It Simple Stupid! Therefore a simple background, a simple light setup and minimal distractions in the image.

Editing

I do most of my work in Lightroom. I sharpen a little, adjust contrast to create some definition between light and dark areas. I generally shoot on the 'dark side' generally (a little under exposed), but will pull the highlights back to reduce any hot spots. And I often enhance the vibrance. This combination gives me an image that doesn't look 'washed out', which is my preference.

In my camera bag

I have 2 camera bodies, an EOS 6D mark 2 and an EOS 1D mark 3. I use the 1 D for action like motorsports mainly and the 6D for pretty much everything else! I have Canon 50mm f1.2 which I love, a 16-35 f2.8, a 24-105 f4.0, 100 f2.8, 2X converter and a Sigma 120-300 f2.8. I also have an old Canon G 11 compact camera which I sometimes use for BTS video (which I always forget to do!) and a GoPro which I usually forget to use as well...note to self: Learn how to capture and edit video!

Feedback

Don't worry about fancy equipment, you could capture this with any type of light and a white sheet, you just need to adjust exposure to suit...and make sure your model stays perfectly still.
