the Hebrew Inscription of "Sanctus" was a punishment imposed upon a Jew, Eliass Backoffen, who was convicted of abusing the religious statue. According to legendi, he was laughing at the figure on cross who had lost his head due to an errant canon ball. Beneath the group there is a plaque regarding group explaining the offensive text. The text was added in 1696.
