Location
In a hotel room in Macau, ChinaTime
Strangely enough, this shoot was done early morning, probably 8 am or so. The shoot had been initially planned to happen on the evening of the previous day but a couple of delays in the models trip (not her fault) caused her to arrive very later on that day and terribly tired so we decided that was not the best time to shoot and we moved it to early morning next day as she had to travel again mid-day.Lighting
The shoot is pretty much about lighting. The idea was to recreate a scene in which neon lights invade the room (we are talking about Macau, "the Asian Vegas" so...) I had to make the room as dark as I could (to simulate nighttime) and using flashlights with colored gels I simulated the neon effect. The idea was also to give some "pulp fiction" style (I'm very inspired by old movies)Equipment
Camera: Canon EOS 7D mark II Lens: Canon EF 24mm F2.8 pancake 2 Flashes: 1 Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT and 1 Speedlite 430Ex II both off-camera triggered with Phottix Odin triggers. No other equipment was usedInspiration
As I mentioned earlier on, the idea was to recreate a scene in which neon lights invade the room in a style that fuses both the location (Macau and its famous neon lights) and scenes from the motion picture "pulp fiction" from Quentin Tarantino.Editing
small light and contrast corrections. overall smoothen of the scene. In my camera bag
Camera: Canon EOS 7D Mark II, sometimes a 5D Mark II Lens: Canon EF 24mm F2.8 pancake (handy, small, sharp, goes everywhere) then a 50 f1.4 and a medium zoon Sigma Art 24-105 f4 (usually). Sometimes I add or replace the Canon EF 50mm for the Sigma 35mm Art f1.4 (according to the space I have available). Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT Speedlite 430Ex II Phottix Odin triggers.Feedback
It's all about contrast when you want something to pop out in a scene like this. So play by hearing and go absolutely manual all the time. Trying to use TTL to shoot the flashes is just a waste of time as the system would not understand the mood and will fire are all LIGHT possible, making the scene boring, flat, and too bright.
