Behind The Lens

Location

This is a photo of Macau's most emblematic landmark, the so-called Ruins of Saint Paul's.

Time

This was taken around blue hour, when was already starting to move into pitch black

Lighting

All lighting in the image is natural. My job was just to control it so I could have enough but not too much in some areas. The trick is to catch the huge light projectors that lighten the monument when they are just on as they take some time to reach full output and deliver a softer light.

Equipment

Only camera, handheld, nothing too crazy. just steady hands.

Inspiration

By chance, i found this location where I could see the monument that the image of Macau against a background and foreground of the city, the old city, the rooftops, the illegal constructions, all that makes the true Macau beyond the glamour of the 5-star hotels and the luxurious casinos that support it.

Editing

I cooled it down a little more than the original shot to capture more of the blue tones.

In my camera bag

A camera body (several options). Usually small and light. a general-purpose lens like a zoom of 18-135mm or 24-105mm and a prime, usually a 50mm 1.4.

Feedback

Try to find a spot that gives you a true glimpse of the city you live in. that represents it. Then try to observe how the shapes and colors change at different times of the day and choose the one you like the most. I have similar photos of this scene at a dozen of different times of the day or night.
