Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured in the steamy ravine cutting through Old Man's Cave State Park in Ohio.

Time

It was late in the day, and I was soaked with sweat. It must have been in the 90s down there, eleven stories down from the top of the park.

Lighting

I had to chase the lighting. The sun kept darting in and out, and I just knew that once I set up my composition it would disappear, but fate was with me!

Equipment

Canon R, Sigma 18-35, Gizo mini tripod.

Inspiration

I had been invited to the park many times, but this was my first look at it. There are countless images to be taken in that park, but I wanted just one that showed the almost prehistoric age of the area. Unbelievable what time can do to rock.

Editing

Yes. I manually bracketed the exposure for HDR post in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I carry an assortment of things for different opportunities. I use the Canon R for landscape work, I have an Insta360 One X for those amazing 360 situations, and I carry a DJI Mavic 2 for when I just can't get the shot from the ground.

Feedback

I have not done much landscape work, but have followed the advice of those who share on Youtube. Regardless of their inspiring tips and tricks, the one thing I see in them all is a calm collected, and deliberate focus on that which they work to capture. I like the idea that they seem to "feel" there is a composition coming. I let that mind frame guide me through Old Man's Cave, and at one point I knew there was something there in the bend of that stream, set up for what I hoped would happen, and then just patiently waited for everything to cooperate.
