This was taken in chester zoo UK! I love this zoo so much, i love how much they do for the animals, environment and really helping the wild wildlife saving them from extinction! I have membership and went there after lockdown, these two beautiful macaws were perched in a new area and this one was dancing in the window and eyeing me up and down! I could see his personality and knew i had to photograph it!Time
If I remember rightly we arrived at this section of the zoo around 4pm, we always go in the afternoon because we have membership so we try to avoid the crowds! Luckily everyone was leaving and this beauty had no one looking at him so i became his number one fan!Lighting
I didn’t use any flash as that would startle and scare the animals so i just used the natural daylight! This was taken through glass so i’m glad I didn’t get any reflections, the lighting was just perfect that day!Equipment
I took the picture hand held! I’m in a wheelchair so getting around a zoo with a camera means taking as little as possible! I used my Canon 6D Mark 2 with my zoom 80-300mm lens and that’s it!Inspiration
The animals at chester zoo are so photogenic! My favourite thing to do is sit and wait for that moment to capture the animal in all it’s glory! I go regularly! I once caught a lion in his new habitat running out for dinner and that was my best picture and that made me hungry for more so once lockdown lifted and our zoo’s reopened i was straight back there with my camera ready for my next best shot!Editing
Yes i did! I was so stunned by his beautiful colours that i had to lift them in lightroom! I also noticed the background was multicoloured but again was very dull! All i did was enhance what was already there, the background colours matched the colours of the Macaw and it all fitted perfectly so i just enhanced the colours and brought the texture out on the Macaw! In my camera bag
I have 2 bags, one usually only comes with me to big events, my main one consists of my camera body, 50mm, 40mm, 80mm and 80-300mm lenses, lens wipes, 6 SD cards, 6 USB’s, external flash, batteries and my business cards along with random things that i can never remember how to use!Feedback
Always keep you awareness up! Go for things other people aren’t near! For example i could have gone to the busiest animal, the one that everyone wanted to see but i went to the quietest area, spent time talking to the Macaw, i photographed him loads! People weren’t interested in the bird but when i showed them the photos the response was “wow! I will have to find him the next time i’m there” beauty is everywhere, it’s up to you where and how you find it! Showcase it! Show everyone what your seeing! Bring people’s attention to things people are to busy to notice! Make them stop and look! And most importantly be confident in yourself! Photography in my eyes has no right and wrong way! You use it to express yourself, make your mark! Just create!
