Partial view of the Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon and the bridge that crosses the lagoon in southeast Iceland (part of National highway 1). Jökulsárlón is a large glacial lake in southeast Iceland, on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park.

Jökulsarlon is a glacial lagoon, bordering Vatnajökull National Park in southeastern Iceland. It is Iceland's deepest lake, with a depth of 284 m - 932 ft, and since it is situated practically at sea level, its depth is just about all below the sea level. Its still, blue waters are dotted with icebergs from break-offs at the surrounding Breidamerkurjökull Glacier, part of larger Vatnajökull Glacier. The Glacier Lagoon flows through a short waterway into the Atlantic Ocean, leaving chunks of ice melting on a black sand beach both at the lake and at the ocean's edge. The larger ice chunks drift towards the outflow channel and get stuck there until sufficient melting has occurred for the ice to clear the depth of the channel, then the remaining structure flows out into the Atlantic Ocean.

Interestingly, the water in the lagoon is a mixture of fresh water and salty sea water with substantial changes during the seasons. Basically the saltwater that flows in with the tides increases during the autumn, winter and spring seasons, and declines during the summer seasons when the additional fresh water generated from glacial melts flushes out a good part of the salt water. The salinity in the water is also stratified at various levels with multiple temperature inversions occurring within the water column. - A very interesting lake both visually as well as geologically.
