Behind The Lens

Location

The original photo was taken very early in the morning, with all the small drops left by the mist. It was a misty morning in my area in Uruguay.

Time

As the weather was rather odd, but beautifully misty, I decided to walk over the nearby lake (Laguna del Sauce) in Maldonado Uruguay, around 6am in the morning. As it's winter down here, it was just dawn, and the sun didn't light this scenery too much.

Lighting

The only light I used was the natural light , coming from the relection of the water nearby. As I stated before, around that time of the early morning, the sun was just coming up, so I waited till the light was enough to have the spiderweb lit but with all the drops shown and get the beautiful reflections . No water or sprinkler was used. Only nature :)

Equipment

This photo was taken with my Fuji xt4, and the 80mm macro lens. No flash, and handheld.

Inspiration

Spiderwebs are fascinating pieces of art if you can get close to them and grab a good look. The lake has a lot of spiders from small to bigger ones, and during the early morning hours you can see a lot of them being lit by the soft sun reflection. I loved the original image and though about processing in a different way than what we usually see.

Editing

In this particular case, I started cleaning the image with Photoshop, then, selected the best and sharpest part of it, and cropped. After cropping I saved it to a tiff file, which in turn was turned into black and white. Finally I used a very small and simple program named Circular Studio that turned my photo into circular shape, From then onwards I just worked to find the most lovely combination of shapes for my taste. Finally I polished the image a little bit more again in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

My bag is rather simple, as it is used mostly for either birding or macro photography. But, I use two different cameras. On one hand I take my very old Canon 5Dsr, paired with a Tamron 150-600 G2 for birding purposes. On the other hand, my Fuji xt4 , is paired with my Fujifilm xt 80.mm . I usually take some extra batteries, filters , some stuff for cleaning up the filters over the lenses and a small pancake lens. Other times I get carried away and also take some other lenses, such as the tamron 85 mm, which I have been using for landscapes.

Feedback

In nature you can find a lot of different things, from small insects, plants, to bigger animals, and trees. Everything is valid for your creative process. Just try to really see what you have in front. It's normal that we just pass by ordinary things and feel they are boring, yet, any ordinary photo can be different, if you change for example your point of view. Lay on the ground, and take birds eyes from the same level, climb on a bridge and get the focus from the fences and what's in sight, or simply follow a small insect and wait for their special moment, when light favours them and you can catch a beautiful , yet not ordinary, image. For my spyderweb, I just explored a lot of them that were nearby, and chose the one with the place I could lean, and with the best background as well. Specially due to the reflections those tiny drops were making on the web. Having patience with nature photography is key to something well achieved.
