With a passion for retro design, the Pike Factory, a special project group of Nissan, designed the Nissan Figaro in 1989. Initially intended only for the Japanese market, this small car was presented at the Tokyo Motor show that same year. The overwhelming success and the smooth sale of the 6,000 copies of the car envisaged meant that the car manufacturer subsequently produced an additional 14,000 Figaros, which were sold to the lucky winners of a raffle organized by Nissan.
In appearance, the Figaro resembles the Datsun Fairlady models that were introduced to the market in the 1960s. This gives the compact Nissan Figaro an old-timer look & feel, which was clearly appreciated both in and outside Japan. Although the Figaro was originally only seen in Japan, it can now also be spotted elsewhere as it has frequently been exported as a used car to customers within Europe.
The Figaro was produced as a compact car with the appearance of an old-timer in only four colors. This is unlike most other cars. The colors Topaz Mist, Pale Aqua, Emerald Green and Lapis Gray symbolize the four seasons. The steering wheel of this car is placed on the right side. In addition to an open roof, the Figaro is equipped with air conditioning, a CD player, a three-speed gearbox and a leather interior. Since the interior and technical specifications of the Figaro were standard, every model looks the same, except for the color of the body.
A striking feature of the small car is the space that both the driver and the passenger have. The seats are of a large size and feel a lot more comfortable than one would expect at first glance. There is plenty of legroom and the open roof makes the Figaro ideal for cruising in the summer. As a used car, the car is popular with retro enthusiasts and couples. Since it is a two-seater, this car is not so practical for families.
The hood of the Nissan Figaro houses a 4-cylinder 1 liter engine, which is equipped with a turbo. The existing compressor does not directly improve the power of the car, but it is perfectly suited to reduce consumption. In combination with a three-way catalytic converter, the result is a car that is economical and also relatively clean. The automatic transmission in the Figaro has only three stages, which means that at a speed of 120 km-h you can quickly reach a rpm of 4,500. The top speed is 160 km-h. A third brake light and power steering show that the Figaro was quite innovative for its time. It forms a nice contrast with the classic appearance.
The persistent demand for this fun two-seater proves that the Nissan Figaro is a durable and high-quality car. More than 25 years after its launch, it is still on the road and can also be found on the second-hand market. The Figaro has now become a real old-timer that exudes class, without losing its quirkiness. Its performance and comfort amaze drivers who have never driven a Figaro before, as its small volume and appearance suggest otherwise. Parts can be easily found and maintenance is not a problem either.

So cute! Well the steering wheel is on the right side for me as 99% of cars in Australia are on the right hand side 😊 Great photo too Joop! 💚

Very cool! I have owned two 69 Datsun Fairlady convertibles and loved them very much. When I was broke, and had to sell my last one, I almost cried. They were the most enjoyed cars I ever owned. Now I am priced out of the market for them, so will likely never own another one again. 😿
