Borage, or cucumber herb, is an annual, hardy herb and grows to about 90 centimeters in height. The plant is covered with coarse, stinging, white hairs. The stems are hollow and bear bushy, dark green leaves. From June to October the pendulous, star-shaped, blue-purple flowers appear with pointed petals.
The seedlings resemble those of the cucumber. The young sprouts also taste like cucumber. That is why it is also called cucumber herb. Borago would refer to "Burra which means rough cloth or "hairy piece of clothing. This refers to the hair of the plant. "Officinalis" means originating from the pharmacist's workshop and refers to its earlier recognition as a medicinal herb.
