Location
The picture was taken in a narrow laneway at the side of Halle 53 in Winterthur, Switzerland. The wall is covered in graffiti and makes a good location.Time
The picture was taken at around 3.30pm. I had a permit to shoot pictures from 2pm until 5pm. Unfortunately as it rained the entire time I was shooting the light didn't change in any way. It was just flat light for the full shoot.Lighting
It rained the entire time we were there but I really wanted to use that location. The rain started to ease off for a few minutes so we ran out to the location took three or four frames and ran back inside.Equipment
The pic was shot on a Canon 5D Mk4 with a canon 85mm f1.4, no flash or lights, it was taken using the overcast daylightInspiration
I've recently started shooting portraits and I'm a big fan of graffiti art so I like the mix the two. My model, Linda, has these incredible blue eyes and I wanted to use them as the focal point to draw your attention. This picture is very different from the pictures of shot of Linda in our previous shoot so I wanted to push it a little further and be a bit more artistic with her.Editing
I do as little as possible to my pictures in post processing. This shot was taken on a cold day in the rain so in post I made her skin a little softer looking and the wall a little more contrasty. In my camera bag
My favourite subject is aviation, closely followed by portraiture. For aviation I have a canon 5d mk4 and canon 7d mk2, I recently changed from the Canon 100-400mm II USM to the Sigma 60-600mm, I also have the Sigma 1.4 converter but I rarely use it. This lens covers all possibilities so I don't usually bring any other lenses. For portraiture I use the 5d Mk4 with the canon 85mm 1.4. Previously I used the 100-400mm or my 50mm 1.8 for portraiture but after using the 85mm 1.4 I wouldn't use anything else. I don't have studio lights and I'm not a big flash fan so I prefer to use available light with a reflector. Other than that I have a canon 24-70 which I rarely use.Feedback
I would advise people to check out every inch of the location before you start shooting. Know your surroundings. I spent 2 hours and 55 minutes shooting indoors on this shoot and my best shot from the shoot was taken in the few minutes out side in the rain in a dark and not very clean alley near by which I stumbled across by accident. Never be afraid to try different locations or different poses, trial and error is very important, you learn more from mistakes than you do from a success.
