I was born and raised in California, consequently the California Golden Poppy, the state flower of California, is one of my favorite flowers. I frequently photograph California Golden Poppies because they turn up essentially everywhere in the Spring and they are so bright and beautiful with their faces glowing in the bright sun. I recently acquired an Olympus M.Zuiko Pro 300mm f4.0 telephoto lens, so I wandered down to the Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve to test it out. I found the lens to be rather heavy on my very lightweight OM-D E-M5 camera body, but with both camera and lens Image Stabilization working together I was able to take a number of photos while handholding the camera and lens. The poppies in this photo were easily 30 to 40 yards away, yet the image is clear, well focused and detailed. This photo was taken on Friday the 14th of May in 2021.

This photo was taken at the Jackson Botttom Wetlands just South of Hillsboro, Oregon.Time
Time of day was right at Noon. I was just out and about testing my newly acquired 300mm M.Zuiko f4.0 lens.Lighting
The Poppies were in direct sunlight.Equipment
My trusty Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II with my newly acquired Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 300mm F4.0 IS Pro lens.Inspiration
I had just acquired my Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 300mm F4.0 IS Pro lens and wanted to test it out. The lens has built in image stabilization and I wanted to see how good the detail could be while shooting handheld. This was shot at 1/250th of a second, which is fairly fast, but I still think the foreground detail is excellent for a handheld photo from a 300mm lens, especially since the photo was also cropped down from a horizontal to a vertical.Editing
Cropped down from a horizontal to a vertical and likely just punched up the contrast and the color saturation a bit.In my camera bag
My Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II with an M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm F2.8 Pro attached to it. I generally also carry my 8mm F1.8 Fisheye Pro, 60mm f2.8 ED Macro, and my 40-150mm F2.8 Pro as well.Feedback
Always keep your eyes open and look at things from a variety of angles, you never know what you might see from another angle. Never delete you photos from your camera before downloading them onto your computer, since sometimes that little screen on the back of your camera hides a great photo inside a not so great larger photo.
