Behind The Lens
Location
I was living in Tacoma last year and this place beckoned me back to live. Spring in the Columbia River Gorge is incomparable. Rowena's Crest, between Hood River and The Dalles is a stunning plateau on the south side of the river. The hills burst with wildflowers and photographers from far and wide come to shoot them. I am just lucky enough to call this place home.Time
Sunrise is the best time.Lighting
The focus for me was the sky and how it matched the flowers... but if the sky wasn't exposed properly I would lose all that color.Equipment
My Sony A7iii was right out of the box and I was still trying to figure out how to turn it on let alone take a photo at sunrise. I swapped lenses with a fellow photographer, I wasn't using my Sony 10-18mm very much and I desperately wanted the 24-105mm f4 from Sony. The camera rested on top of my FEISOL CT-3332 Rapid Carbon Fiber Tripod with a 3 Legged Thing Airhed securing my camera.Inspiration
Wildflowers and I have a special relationship. I am like Ferdinand in that way. I feel like the color and the fleeting aspect of their lives make them the ultimate prize in photography. The window is so small to catch them in full bloom, the amount of luck one needs to do so is paramount.Editing
I did. The highlights needed to be dropped drastically and the shadows were dragged up. I added some texture to really make the flowers pop. No color editing was needed. The photo was shot at 1250 iso so I used a little texture to remove the noise. In my camera bag
I am a minimalist. I bring one lens, a tripod, and a camera. I like to travel light and fast and if the lens I bring can't get the shot, I don't take the shot and move on.Feedback
Be patient and make sure you don't trample on any flowers. This is a delicate environment and I have seen too many photographers tromp through these meadows with reckless abandon.
