This composition occurred quite by accident. I was strolling up a hill in Charters Towers with a good friend. He was leading me to a butterfly grove, which I intended to shoot. Butterflies don’t like to sit still, so none of those photos turned out very well.

But on the way back to the car I spotted a skull by a small waterway. I had intended to take a long exposure of that waterway and when I found the skull I thought it would make an interesting focal point. I’m taking this photo I broke a rule which have always followed otherwise. That rule is to disturb nary a leaf, branch nor stone when taking a photograph.

When I take photographs I take the shot exactly as I find it. I won’t even move a branch or blade of grass if it is in the way. Every other photo I have taken has been a pure nature or wildlife shot. This is my first - and so far only - concept piece. I’m very happy with how it turned out and it is one of my favourites.
