Behind The Lens

Location

This was a simple setup, laid out in my living room and taking advantage of the natural window light.

Time

It was March and the time was around 16.00, so the soft light was beginning to fade.

Lighting

I wanted a simple, soft lighting solution, so chose to use only natural light from a North facing window.

Equipment

My camera is a Nikon D850 and the lens was my Nikkor 105mm f2 DC - a favourite. The camera was set on a tripod and I hung a dark navy blanket behind the vase to create the dark, neutral background.

Inspiration

The flowers were a gift from a friend, to mark our wedding anniversary. I love tulips and wanted to capture their simple beauty, to commemorate the event.

Editing

I edited the shot in Lightroom, opting for a square crop, and I used some 'dodging' to further darken the background to bring out the multiple colours of the blooms.

In my camera bag

I always carry my Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 - it is so versatile! And I often have alongside it my Sigma Art 35mm f1.4, which I love to use 'wide open'.

Feedback

Don't try too hard! The simplicity of this composition enhances its impact and helps create the appeal of the image.
