Behind The Lens
Location
This shot was taken on Beacon Hill, in the village of Ellesborough, Buckinghamshire.Time
The photo was taken at the end of the afternoon, in January, when the light levels drop quickly. The evening sunlight is at its best for only about 30 minutes, so the trick is to be at your location at the right time, with enough time available to work.Lighting
The sky colours were the attraction and the composition was all about the silhouette. I wanted to take advantage of the saturation in the sky colours and the opportunity for a sharp contrast.Equipment
Shot handheld on a Nikon D750, with a 24-70mm lens.Inspiration
Despite being February, it had been a beautiful day. We just wanted to get outside and enjoy it. I knew we were in for a sunset treat, so went prepared.Editing
Minimal post-processing. Just some contrast tweaking and a spot of sharpening, alongside some cropping to balance the composition. In my camera bag
My kit usually comprises the D750, a Nikkor 24-70mm and 70-200mm (both f2.8), a Nikkor 50mm (f1.4), and a Sigma 35mn (f1.4).Feedback
Know your nearby locations and their orientation - i.e. where does the sun set? Having a willing model is often helpful, I find. I like the interest that a person can bring to a landscape. And give yourself enough time to set up.
