Behind The Lens

Location

The photos was taken when I was on an early morning boat ride on the Ganges River, Varanasi, India

Time

I cannot give an accurate time the photo was taken as I do not change the in camera clock when travelling, however I hired a boat whilst still dark for a sunrise cruise along the Ganges River at Varanani in India. The shot was taken in the morning golden hour and I estimate between 7.00 and 7.30am.

Lighting

The early morning light was perfect with the low winter sun lighting up the golden sandstone buildings along the ghats with the added bonus of all the action of worshipers and pilgrims taking place along the shore of the Ganges River.

Equipment

This image was taken with a Canon 90D camera and 100-400mm 4.5-5.6 L IS EF USM lens. As I was on a row boat no tripod was used and flash was not required with the beautiful natural light.

Inspiration

Originally I hired the boat to take sunrise photos along the Ganges River and as we were returning to shore I noticed all the pilgrims and worshipers beginning to line the shores to perform their daily rituals so I asked the boat owner if we could move closer to shore to try and get some candid portrait shots. Whilst I was very happy with a number of images this one stood out to me due to the colours of the buildings, flowers floating in the river and the worshiper performing his prayers. I was able to take the photo without being spotted or disturbing him.

Editing

The image was auto balanced and auto sharpened in Photoshop elements. No other post processing was undertaken.

In my camera bag

I currently carry two camera bodies, Canon 90D and 80D together with three lenses. Canon 100-400mm 4.5-5.6 L IS EF USM , Canon 15-85mm 3.5-5.6 IS USM and a Canon 100mm macro 2.8L IS USM lens. I also carry a Canon270EX II flash and a suiri carbon fibre tripod.

Feedback

If in Varanasi, India an early morning boat trip along the Ganges River is a must. It is very easy to hire a boat along the river shores. Try leaving before sunrise and hire the boat for a couple of hours so you get to see sunrise from the river and on your return journey ask to go closer to the ghats along the river to get some candid portrait shots of the locals going about their early morning business together with the pilgrimes and worshipers. Respect the worshipers and try not to disturb them and do not take photos when requested not to.
