Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken along the river about 10 blocks away from where I live.

Time

In the winter time and I love taking photo of frost. It was January 25, 2021, when I woke up early morning I saw foggy covering the area where I live and I knew the river will be foggy too and it is a right time for me to go out and taking photo of frost along the river. So I went out with my camera and frost hunting along the river and it was about 9 40am when I arrived at the river.

Lighting

When I arrived at the river, the fog really thick covering the surface of the river and all the way up as far as the fog can reach. So thick the fog also covered the road and visibility really low. All trees, bushes, grasses covered with thick frost, very thick, the kind of frost I love to see, its unique and beautiful. I got all the lighting I need to take good photo with natural light. That morning the sun shining so bright, it went through the fog and the fog reduced the strength of the sun light and the light hit the frost on the trees and the frost bounce the light back to the fog, This process create a perfect lighting - a natural lighting. Taking photo during foggy winter day is a perfect day to take photos, brave the cold, go out with your camera.

Equipment

I am using Canon EOS R with 24-105mm lens with tripod. No flash.

Inspiration

In winter time I always love to see frost not only on trees, bushes, grasses but also on lamp posts, fences, lights and anything that frost can be created. Frosts are unique and beautiful, it showing the power and beauty of winter. That is what inspired me to take this photo. I brave the cold, go out with my camera and taking as many photos as I could of frost on everything I can find.

Editing

Yes I do, I am using the Lightroom Classic to post-processing all of my photos. I correct the white balance accordingly and editing the photo to bring out the colors as close as to the actual natural colors. For this photo I did very little editing because when I took the photo the sun light was bright enough to give good lighting on the trees, the fog, the ground, the house. I have

In my camera bag

I have my Canon Powershot (my first camera) and my new camera Canon EOS R with 24-105mm lens, tripod, extra battery, extra memory card, lens cleaner. I am planning to buy more lens in the future.

Feedback

Winter time and you see fogs are everywhere it means that frosts are everywhere too, so do not delay. Get your camera ready and get everything you need in your bag, bundle up (very important) and have extra gloves/mittens in the car also bring heat pad to warm up your hands and heading out looking for a good location to park the car (important because you need to go back to the car to warm up yourself in the car and go out again to take more photo). Make sure you set your camera ahead of time, I always set my camera in Aperture setting (I adjust the F/stop depending what kind of photo I would like to take), so I do not have to worry about the shutter (camera will setting it for me) and set my ISO to 100-200. Good luck and keep clicking.
