Location
I took this photo in Cordoba, Argentina during the World Rally Championship. Sebastian Loeb in his Citroen was the overall champion in 2007Time
I LOVE going fast! I remember getting up like a kid on Christmas morning to get ready and drive out to the WRC site to get a good spot to watch from! I’m so happy that I decided to purchase my first DSLR camera for my 7 month trip to South America. It was well into the afternoon when I snapped this and many other photos from the races.Lighting
Natural light is the best light. This photo almost could have taken itself!Equipment
I still have this camera! The first digital SLR I ever purchased, Canon Rebel xTi with nothing more than the 18-55mm. Many other photographers were set up on tripods with speedlite flashes and zoom lenses, I took all my photos handheld with no flash.Inspiration
I was extremely motivated to get some good shots thinking that one of the local rally drivers might be interested in using them for their website or advertising. A rally magazine editor eventually contacted me to use a few of my photos in their magazine. I happily gave permission to use as many as they would like and for nothing more than a photographer credit. Unfortunately I did not hear back after our initial conversation.Editing
I took this photo so long ago…I didn’t know much about photo editing yet but when I added it to my Viewbug page I may have sharpened it a little. Other than that it is what it is!In my camera bag
I have upgraded my gear since this trip and I normally carry my Canon 6D Mark i with my trusty Canon 28-70mm F2.8L IS. I normally have my Canon 50mm F1.4 USM and a Godox Speedlite flash. Of course I no longer leave the house without a tripod or two! ;-)Feedback
Panning is super fun when you get the hang of it! To get I Nevsky blurred background I usually keep my shutter speed around 50-60 and shoot handheld rather than on a tripod. If you have a nice panning tripod you may find that it’s a little easier if you’re shooting multiple moving subjects from the exact same spot. I like to be mobile and agile when shooting action so the my background is not always the same.
