Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at an old Ukrainian Church located near the Canada-U.S border. It came up in a Google search when I was looking for ghost towns which have always interested me.

Time

This was taken in the middle of the afternoon while I was driving around the countryside performing site surveys for my day job. One of the perks of driving a lot for work!

Lighting

Practice makes better! Playing with exposure compensation and depth of field have really motivated me to push my gear and explore more creativity in my photography style.

Equipment

This photo was taken with my Canon T5i and 50mm f1.4 USM before I upgraded to a used Canon 6D. It was also around the time I started aerial photography with DJI drones. There are a few aerial photos on my sites from this stop as well so feel free to check out the rest of my work! airwolfemedia.com

Inspiration

I’ll be honest, my inspiration for this photo came directly from Viewbug photo contests and challenges! They’ve really pushed me to get out and diversify the subjects I photograph. Thank you Viewbug!

Editing

I try to stick to simple colour grading when it comes to editing. There are times that I’ll tweak the contrast and sharpness to bring out more detail but I love posting “unedited” photos!

In my camera bag

When I go out on a photography mission, I bring everything! I would rather carry around extra weight than wish I hadn’t left something at home. Having said that, since upgrading to full frame, my go-to, must-haves are my Canon 6D, Canon 24-70mm 2.8L, Canon 70-300mm f4L IS and my Canon 50mm f1.4 USM…and a tripod!

Feedback

I used to make the mistake of insisting that I fit the entire subject into my frame. Getting in close and pushing the focus away from the centre of the frame have definitely made of photographs stand out more. Go with your gut or use the rule of thirds but don’t be afraid of negative space! It’ll make your subject POP!
