Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a relative's home during an unprecedented snow storm recently in Central Texas.

Time

This was taken between about 2 and 3 in the afternoon during a break in some of the worst of the winter weather when the birds were trying to take advantage of the calm in order to snatch up some seed.

Lighting

Snow lighting is tricky, especially when it's overcast because the background can easily wash out all of the detail I'm trying to capture. I usually like to address these issues in the editing part of the process by adjusting things like the white balance, contrast and exposure.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3500 DSLR with a 70-300 mm Nikkor Lens and a nice warm blanket which was almost equally as valuable given the weather.

Inspiration

Generally I really enjoy capturing moments that might otherwise go unnoticed, especially in nature so I'm always trying to keep my eyes open for opportunity. We were displaced by the storm but I had my camera to document everything and this little guy stealing snacks caught my attention.

Editing

I actually really enjoy the post-processing phase and primarily rely on Adobe's Lightroom to crisp up details or occasionally do major restorative work. It's a balance and ultimately my goal is to use editing to enhance my images and add a finishing touch.

In my camera bag

These days I've been carrying my go to Nikon DSLR with both standard lenses, an extra memory card, batteries, a travel macro lens for my phone, a small notebook for ideas, a lens ball, a cleaning cloth, sometimes a tripod and a big ol' bottle of water.

Feedback

Macro Bird Photography in my experience requires patience. Being patient has provided me many opportunities for great bird photos regardless of the situation, even if it's a blizzard!
