Take a walk in the forest, and just breathe.

"I took a walk in the woods and came out taller than the trees." ????Henry David Thoreau.

I can't recall exactly what I was thinking walking back to camp, but I remember what I was feeling. . . Fulfilled. Pensive. And a whole lot of wonder. The forests of the Pacific Northwest will keep me coming back as much as the coast. We have plenty of forest in Utah, but not like this. It felt... sacred. Like I was walking above the old bones of the earth, and I was welcomed by them. It was awe-inspiring.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken just off the Oregon coast, by the little town of Coquille.

Time

This was taken just before sunset.

Lighting

The sun had just started to hit the water, and it was cloudy, so the partially diffused light gave the forest a moody atmosphere.

Equipment

I was shooting on my Nikon D3400 with my Tamron 18-270mm lens. I also had a CPL filter.

Inspiration

I was documenting my road trip from Utah to the coast, and these trees seemed like a fitting capstone for the trip.

Editing

Processed in Lightroom Classic. Some adjustments to the greens and yellows, a little contrast, and some filters and local adjustments to highlight the sunbeam coming through the trees.

In my camera bag

Normally just my Nikon D3400, Tamron 18-270mm lens, lens cleaners, tripod, and filters.

Feedback

Take a series of photos of the same frame. I will take two underexposed shots, four or five "correctly exposed" shots with various settings, and two overexposed shots. Depending on the mood you want to capture, you may find that your *best* picture isn't the one you thought when you were snapping away.
