Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home studio in Fayetteville, NC

Time

This is one of my favorite images of my daughter, and one of the few she has allowed me to take of her. September 2015, she was invited to participate in the "Ms Teen Pageant 2016" We were very excited and I had been honing my studio lighting skills, so this was a perfect opportunity test them out. I was very pleased with the outcome. Photo taken in the afternoon between 2 and 3pm.

Lighting

I wanted to highlight her eyes and let them draw the viewer in, also to accentuate her cheek bone using a light soft shadow. This was a three light set up.

Equipment

This was shot with Canon 5D Mark II, Lens 24-105 1:4,tripod bogen, flash speedlite 430EXII

Inspiration

Well, as stated earlier it was an honor for my daughter to receive an invitation to compete in 2016 Ms Teen Pageant. I wanted to capture every moment of this opportunity for her and the family.

Editing

This particular photo,I used PortraitPro, to help smooth out the skin, brighten the eyes.

In my camera bag

I make sure I have these two lenses, always, the very versatile canon 24-105 1:4, such a great range, my go to lens. When I ready to reach out an touch someone, or pull them close I reach for my canon 70-200 1:2, love the compression it gives. Third but certainly not the least is my trusty wide angle 50mm.

Feedback

Well none of the people I have photographed are professional models. So making your clients as comfortable and relaxed as possible is always a good thing. Laughter is a really good tool to use. Couples, asking questions like"How did you meet?or What do you like most about the other person? Will shift the clients focus from the camera to each other and authentic emotions and expression begin to manifest. Those moments when the forgets the camera is there are priceless. I have found that, women really appreciate after a few shots have been taken, to be shown the photos, usually helps to put them at ease.
