Behind The Lens

Location

Got up early to catch the sun rise while staying at a resort in Cancun. The weather and clouds were absolutely perfect. I was thrilled with the results.

Time

I had planned to get to the shoreline perhaps 10 minutes before sunrise which was about 7am. I was able to catch a series of shots showing the progression of the increasing lighting conditions. This gave me options for selecting the shot with the best lighting/exposure.

Lighting

Hands down, the best times are shortly before dawn and an hour or so into the morning and that last hour of sunlight of the day including afterglow, the so called "golden hour". I added no special lighting which is really nearly impossible with a long, landscape shot.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 60D. No tripod, no special lens, flash or filter of any kind.

Inspiration

I just wanted to get an awesome sunrise on the beach and I got it!

Editing

I did some post-processing using Lightroom. I created a little more 'drama' with the clouds, was able to pull more of the detail of the pier from the shadows by lightening up that area.

In my camera bag

I don't like to carry a lot of extra gear. To me, less is more. I usually just my basic camera with the 18-135mm lens. I do carry a few colored graduated filters but I didn't use those for this shot. When I know I'm going to take some long shots, I carry a Canon "ultrasonic" 70-300mm telephoto lens with macro 1.5m.

Feedback

Planning is everything. You have to purpose yourself to get those great shots. Sometimes they don't always work but keep at it!
