Behind The Lens
Location
This shot was taken during a visit to York Minster a couple of years ago, before the Pandemic.Time
The problem was taking the shot while tourists were milling about - I finally got it just before closing, when there were less people about.Lighting
I prefer natural light, in fact I can't remember the last time I used flash, and I've been taking photos for a very long time. Look carefully how the light falls before taking the shot, and try different angles.Equipment
Taken on my old Olympus E-520, with the 14-42mm lens, a full stop underexposed for contrast.Inspiration
The wear on the steps captured my imagination - just think how many feet must have gone up and down in the last few centuries - the best part of a thousand yearsEditing
Just a little post processing in Lightroom, to bring out the colours and texture, and allude to a painting. In my camera bag
I carry as little as possible - usually just my Olympus E-M5 Mk11, with the 15 to 75mm lens. As this is a micro four thirds camera, the crop factor is 2, giving a 35mm equivalence of 30 to 150mm. This covers most shots. In the case which travels with me I have a 75 to 300mm, extension tubes, mini tripod, variable ND filter and a sound recorder. I take out what I think I'll need for the shoot.Feedback
take several shots of the subject, from varying angles and pick your favourite.
