Behind The Lens

Location

South Africa, Western Cape, Near Philadelphia a rural and rustic town in the heart of the Western Cape wheat fields, about 50 KM from Cape Town travelling on the N7. From Philadelphia we travel another 5 k/m and we get a tiny river. Extremely lots of Reeds and a most favorite spot for the yellow Finches This a very favorite spot of mine to photograph birds as all through the year you will find different species there

Time

As most birds are very active in the morning, i usually go there just after sunrise. there seems to be a symphony of activity and a real dance of reed hopping. The sky was clear of clouds with the sun rising from the east

Lighting

As being mid morning, round about 10H00, the sun was already climbing in the sky, but still having some warm colors. as the reads was quite high and myself being low to the ground, the reeds created a nice soft light. The sun was from the left side of the bird.

Equipment

Nikon D750, Nikon 200-500mm zoom and used handheld

Inspiration

I love birds and their behavior that seems so erratic at time, but always in a certain pattern, the ways of communication especially around breeding and nest building times. The light was good, crept into the reeds and waited for some time for them to become accustomed to me

Editing

I have PSE 18, and really try not to enhance more than 10 percent, al all my photos are shot in RAW. I do enhance the colors to suit the situation or to what i think it was at the time, and then the usual cropping.

In my camera bag

Nikon D750, Nikon D500, Nikon 24-70 2,8, Nikon 50mm 1,8, Nikon 200-500, SB 900 Flash, some ND9 filters, Manfrotto Tripod

Feedback

For birds, first get to know the birds, there patterns, their behavior, Take you time to enjoy your surroundings, amazing thins happen right next to you. Very important to get the Sun in the right place to create the mood you want, and just enjoy, enjoy yourself
