Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken earlier during the autumn in Sweden in a nature reserve park not far from where I live. It's called Fjällmossen and lies in Östergötland county. During the walk in the woods we past this small little tree dock, and it looked so lonely and serene looking out over the small lake and forest.

Time

It was taken about 14.00 of the day, and during the autumn time of year the sun is set very low in the sky in the northern hemisphere.

Lighting

It was a grey sky but yet bright, and the small lake looked so dark and calm against the beautiful surrounding. This picture was left untouched for months before I decided to fix it, and since I mostly remember this autumn as more grey, rainy and lonelier than ever. I thought this edit of this picture fitted that theme.

Equipment

This was shot on my Canon Mark 5D III. The lens I used was a Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens.

Inspiration

My family likes hiking and geocaching and wanted to explore a new area. They decided to go to this nature reserve, for it's beautiful marshes and moors along the hiking trail. Geocaching is not really my thing, but I like coming with as it's always an opportunity for me to get some new shots. Not knowing what to expect of the surroundings I just brought my camera and two lenses, in hope of finding some nice spots to photograph.

Editing

Yes I did. The sky I replaced with one that had a shorter exposure time, to bring in more details. I have grown very fond of making more monochrome pictures, and especially giving them a bronze/golden effect. I achieved this look by desaturate the colors and put on two color filters, one that is purple and one that is bright orange. With blend modes I configure the filters to make the shadows more purple and the highlights more orange, which gives the whole picture a golden glow. I really liked the red leaves in the foreground so I kept the saturation of the reds. Finally I put some HDR and highlights on the tree bridge.

In my camera bag

I have my Canon 5D Mark III. Lenses I normally have with me is a tele zoom lens, a wide angle lens, a macro lens and a 50 mm for some quick close up portrait photos.

Feedback

I'm still very new to landscape photography, and still consider some of my landscape captures being lucky shots. But my advice overall is to never stop trying. Experiment with angles, perspectives and focal length to find a dynamic of the image that speaks to you as a photographer. And don't be afraid to go out during bad weather. In my experience the post processing is much easier on images taken under a grey sky, and clouds bring more drama to the image than a clear blue sky.
