Cape Disappointment, from a photography standpoint, is no disappointment at all. Let me preface that by saying, if the conditions are right. I live a 5 hours drive away from the cape. A few times, I just went with no preparation and got there when conditions were not ideal. For instance; wrong time of day, no clouds, low tide, etc...This was my third trip and just reflecting back on my second, I remember the weather called for partly cloudy and high tide at noon. The clouds were gone and the sun was playing havoc on my camera lens, as it was predominately in my frame. I recently returned and planned another noon high tide and drove half way to stay in a hotel in Portland. I figured I had plenty of time to get there by noon and the weather was supposed to be ideal, at that time. For some reason, I checked the tide report and high tide was not at noon, but 7:40am. Sheesh! I had to get up and leave by 5am to drive the last 2 hours, in order to get to Cape Disappointment by high tide. When I arrived, it was dark and I had no idea what weather conditions would unfold for me. After 3 attempts, I finally got a shot I am happy with.
Most go here to catch the giant waves, that are know to crash on the rocks. I will have to be content with sun-rays peaking over the lighthouse at sunrise :).
