Behind The Lens

Location

It was taken in Irvine Regional Park, Orange County, CA.

Time

It was around 10 am.

Lighting

The sun was up and the light was harsh when I shot this photo. I used my body to shade the subject and the pop up flash on the camera at half power to give it the sparkle.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 7D Mark II with the pop up flash and an 100-400 Canon L II lens set at close focus.

Inspiration

The red background in the photograph was a rabbit. It was probably killed by a coyote or raptor. When I first arrived, crows were feeding on it. After the crows flew away, wasps started to munch on the meat. I took the photograph partly because I like the color contrast between the yellow wasp and the red meat. The real reason for the photograph was I thought wasps only ate insects; I wanted a photo record of a wasp eating red meat.

Editing

Very little.

In my camera bag

For wildlife, I use the 7D Mark II and the 100-400 lens; for everything else, I take a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV with a 24-105 and either a 16-35 or 70-200. I travel light - Canon EOS M.

Feedback

One thing I like about insects is that they come in many beautiful colors. I like to photograph insects in their own environment and in high color contrast against that environment. Studying the color wheel helps to understand what color combinations make good contrasty photographs. Keep clicking.
