Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the backyard of my parents' house in southeastern Virginia. A lot of my photos are taken while traveling, but I love to see what interesting images I can find close to home too!

Time

This was in mid-afternoon, but by mid-afternoon in December the sun is already well on its way to setting. Golden hour came early!

Lighting

It had been drizzling all day, but the cloud cover was still thin enough for it to seem bright outside. I really love the way things look just after the rain, like everything has been washed clean and studded with glittering droplets. It was late fall, almost winter, when I took this, so the few leaves left on trees were beautifully warm-toned.

Equipment

I used my trusty Canon Rebel SL1 with a 35mm lens and a 20mm macro extension ring. I didn't take a tripod out with me, so I held my breath as I positioned the camera and took each shot to minimize shaking. This close up, even a tiny motion will seem huge!

Inspiration

I was sitting at the dining room table with my laptop, waiting for an update to install, and kept glancing out the window at the raindrops shining on the trees outside. Finally, I couldn't sit inside any longer - I grabbed my camera and dashed out into the yard. I thought the rain had stopped, but it turned out to still be drizzling. In between shots I held my camera under my sweater to keep it dry, pulling it out as I got into position to snap a few pictures and quickly tuck it away again as I readjusted.

Editing

The colors in this image were already beautifully rich and warm, so I didn't have to do much post-processing. I wanted the water drop on the end of the leaf to really pop out, so I brightened the highlights on the drop a little and darkened the shadows behind it to create contrast.

In my camera bag

I travel and backpack a lot, so having a small, lightweight camera is crucial for me. Canon's rebel SL1 fits the bill nicely - I can hold it comfortably in one hand if I have to, and with a small or medium lens it fits into a small bag or sometimes even a large pocket! My 35mm lens is my go-to, but I also frequently use a 100mm, a 24mm, and a set of macro extension rings.

Feedback

Don't run into a wet yard in socks! Take the couple seconds to put on shoes first, or just go barefoot. You will get wet, though. Deal with it.
