Behind The Lens

Location

Hooker Lake in the Mt Cook Region, South Island of New Zealand, this is a well marked trail taking 3 hour's return from the car park it was a very scenic walk crossing swing bridges and experiencing snow capped mountain views with small lakes and streams, this walk is accessible by most people of all types young and old who are moderately fit in fact I passed one guy who only had 1 leg and older couples probably in their 60's - 70's.

Time

I got off to a later start due to travel times, I headed up the track around 11am and reached Hookers lake around 12.30pm, it wasn't ideal light but you take what you can get when visiting new places on a tight time frame, the sky was overcast and there was rain just as I reached the lake.

Lighting

The light was dull due to cloud cover and the constant threat of rain, which it did for a short while when I was setting up my camera and as you can see in my shot, but It maybe years if at all I pass this way again you take what you can get.

Equipment

I used my Sony A7R3 with a Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 mounted on my Sirui carbon tripod, I took a long exposure to smooth out the water and this also helped to get the rain drops effect of short dashes.

Inspiration

The beautiful scenery of New Zealand is a constant inspiration, this shot was a glacier lake in a region I haven't spent much time so I was always going shoot this place no matter what conditions, I would have loved to have been there in the blue hours but that wasn't possible with my travel plans.

Editing

Not much post work here, cropping and straightning the horizon and bring up the saturation slider in colours a little.

In my camera bag

I tend to travel with my Sony A7R3 when doing landscape, I carry a Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 for wide shots I also have a Sony G 24-105mm f4, and 70-200mm f4 these 3 lenses cover most of my Landscape work, I have a small Fuji XT30 with 18-55mm lens for a back up and when I want to shoot a quick Panorama or I just want to travel light. I have other lenses I keep in my main kit and use for specific purposes like my Sony 90mm Macro, and some legacy glass which I don't tend to use much, I prefer zooms to primes for what I shoot as I don't like having to constantly change lenses in the field.

Feedback

Try and get to your destination when the light is at the best early morning or late evening, not only is this ideal for a great landscape shot but there are less people around especially when you are in a popular tourist destination like in this shot, less people bring better opportunity to compose the shot in the best ways, in this shot there were people scattered along the lake edge and this restricted my composition.
