Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the iconic Acorn St in Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood. It is one of my favorite locations to shoot and is extremely popular due to the historic features such as the riverstones used to pave the street in the 1820s.

Time

This photo was taken just after midnight while most of the city slept following a brief snowfall earlier in the day.

Lighting

One of the unique features of Acorn St are the gas lamps that line the street providing a soft light for long exposures.

Equipment

This photo was shot with a Canon 60D paired with a Canon EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM on a cheap tripod and Canon RS-60E3 trigger.

Inspiration

One of my favorite things to shoot is long exposure night photography around the city. For the most part it's a quiet and peaceful time with very few people to get in the way. I was hoping to find a little more snow when I set out for the shot but was just as happy with the way the little amount clung to the leaves on the tree.

Editing

Very minor post-processing was needed for this photo, some shadows and highlight adjustments. I normally take several photos at different exposure intervals during night shoots in order to lessen the amount of processing that needs to be done.

In my camera bag

As a freelance journalist, the "standard" kit is always packed in my bag. Along with (2) Canon 60D bodies, I always have my EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, EF70-200mm f/2.8L II USM, and EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM. For more reach, I pack a Tamron 200-500 f/5.6-6.3 super telephoto, and for a little fun I keep a Rokinon 8mm fisheye but that doesn't get used much.
