Location
This photo was taken at the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia looking down the long abandoned Cell Block 6 corridor.Time
We were on a daytime walking tour of the prison during a recent trip to Philly with a group of friends. They don't allow tripods in the facility so everything had to be shot hand-held. This photo was taken April 29, 2017 at 2:21pm.Lighting
I really wanted to make sure that I was able to capture the essence of the corridor so I had to bump up the ISO slightly and use a slower shutter than I normally like to use when shooting hand-held. There is only natural light coming in to the cell block and I did not want to use a flash and wash out the foreground.Equipment
I shot this image using a Canon EOS 60D with a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 II USM.Inspiration
I wanted to capture the overall emptiness of this abandoned landmark the is buried in the heart of a busy city. Cell Block 6 is only one of a handful of areas that have remained untouched since the prison was abandoned in the 1980's. I've always had a fascination with urban decay and this was something I wanted to capture in all of its glory.Editing
I tend to use the very minimum when it comes to post processing, just enough to bring the photo to life, but not so much to over process it. I slightly adjusted for shadows to bring out some of the items that may have been hidden due to lack of natural light, and adjusted the highlights down to minimize the over exposure from the points where the natural light was entering the corridor. In my camera bag
My camera bag consists of (2) Canon EOS 60D bodies, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, Rokinon 8mm f/3.5 fisheye, Tamron SP 200-500mm f/5-6.3, and a Canon Speedlite 430 EX II.Feedback
Be patient and take plenty of shots. Switch up your shutter speeds and ISO combinations until you feel you have found the exact look your trying to capture. Don't settle.
