Behind The Lens

Location

I took this image in my apartment's balcony. My niece came for dinner willing to pose for me and since every shoot, for me, is a learning opportunity, i took advantage of that.

Time

It was right after dinner, around 9'00pm. It was late July and i remember the sun was low in the sky.

Lighting

Since i have no lighting equipment, i worked with what i had. The light from the sun approaching the horizon.

Equipment

It was just me, my Olympus om-d e-m10 mark III and the M. Zuiko 14-42mm kit lens.

Inspiration

Most of all, i'm eager to learn. I appreciate the work of lots of photographers and regarding portrait photographers in particular, i'm always fascinated by their work and so i tried to make a good portrait, using what i have for the time being regarding my beginner skill level.

Editing

Regarding post-processing, i worked the contrast, i did some local adjustments to lighten her eyes just a tad and to remove one or two blemishes. I also did some split toning, blue for the shadows, orange for the highlights.

In my camera bag

Besides my OM-D E-M10 MARK III i usually have the 14-42mm F3.5/5.6 and the 40-150mm F4/5.6 kit lenses, plus a Sigma 16mm/F1.4 prime lens. I usually carry a tripod, from Three Legged Thing and a few budget ND filters.

Feedback

I'd suggest beginner photographers like me to try and focus on their own vision for a portrait. Despite one being inspired by several great photographers, it is important to try and search for our own thing, our own voice. Take advantage of the best natural light according to your vision if you don't have lighting equipment. You can make meaningful photographs using just natural light.
