The scaly ink fungus ( Coprinus comatus ) is one of the most common of the hundred species of ink fungi.
In youth, the scaly ink fungus's 5-15 cm top hat is egg to bell-shaped, white with a light brown, smooth center and covered with large curled scales. The hat later tears from the brim and fades to black. The hollow stem is 10-20 cm high with a low, movable ring that falls off quickly. The slats are white in the youth, later discoloring from the edge through pink to black.
A young scaly ink fungus tastes excellent, but must be processed immediately after picking. The fungus is no longer edible if liquefaction or discoloration occurs.
