A small Fungus that is a very common Species found all year round often in large groups, growing on all types of rotting wood and stumps. The Flattened and distorted Fruiting body has a distinctive branched appearance, reminiscent of stag antlers. Each branch.is covered in fine white powder that turns black at the tip as its matures. Eventually the powder completely dissipates as the fungus dies. The lower black stem has a slightly hairy, scurfy texture. The Beechmast Candlesnuff .X.carpophila is very similar but much thinner, has fewer branchlets and grows exclusively on rotting Beechmast. Its NOT Edible

Yes Derek, Xylaria hypoxylon, Candlesnuff, not stagshorn, the ful common name of which is Yellow Stagshorn, which is bright yellow as the name suggests :-)
