To see the sun sink down, drowned on his pink and purple and golden floods, and overwhelm Florence with tides of color that make all the sharp lines dim and faint and turn the solid city to a city of dreams, is a sight to stir the coldest nature."

Behind The Lens

Location

The picture was taken in the historic city of Florence, Italy. Standing on the Pont Vecchio, looking towards Pont Santa Trinita across the River Arno.

Time

It was taken mid afternoon about 3pm.

Lighting

It was an overcast day, drizzling slightly. The clouds loomed thick, mostly over the city but faded out towards the far horizon behind the bridge. This created the illusion that the image was taken shortly after sunrise, rather than Midday.

Equipment

The shot was taken using a Sony Alpha-77 ii (SLT) and Vario-Sonnar 16-35 mm F2.8 ZA SSM II lens.

Inspiration

The biggest problem of photographing in a well known tourist attraction is to find a different point of view. The most common shot of the River Arno is usually taken of the Pont Vecchio from the Pont Santa Trinita, I decided to take this shot in reverse.

Editing

Because of the overcast day, I decided to use HDR processing. I took three shots (hand held) +2, 0 and -2 EV. I kept the HDR processing light just to get detail into the clouds. I little boost of saturation to enhance the colours of the building and slight graduated filters from top and bottom to enhance the sunrise effect.

In my camera bag

usually its either my Sony Alpha 99-ii or 77-ii my two basic street lenses Zeiss 16-35 mm F2.8 SSM II and 24-70 mm F2.8 SSM II, a fill in flash HVL-F32M, and plenty of spare batteries fully charged.

Feedback

Ths shot just needs a little care in keeping the symmetry of the bridge and buildings.
