Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on my campus at IIT Roorkee, India. I and my friends used to hang out trying different kinds of photography. It was during one of the photo-walks at night that we had this idea and clicked this picture.

Time

It was one of those cool pleasant nights in my college. And all my friends gathered for a post-dinner coffee and decided to go on a photo-walk. Everyone gathered whatever gear they had, and we brought some candles to experiment with long exposure shots. We were probably up very late till early morning. And this particular shot was taken on August 24, 2019, at 1:42 AM in the night.

Lighting

It was difficult to find a spot dark enough as I was experimenting with Light painting as well. Finally, we decided to venture into one of the darkest places of campus which was apparently haunted :P. For this particular photo, the positioning of the candle and hands was really important to get the shape of hands to look faint enough but also be visible at the same time.

Equipment

A standard tripod, NIKON D5600, no flash.

Inspiration

I was trying out general light painting stuff like writing letters and forming shapes but then we were in a "haunted" place of the campus, so I thought of using candles to make photos that were kind of a silent-horror theme.

Editing

The color of the candle was probably the single thing that affected the mood of the picture most. I found this particular shade of red to convey the idea behind the picture best.

In my camera bag

I usually have Sony-DSC H55 with me, which is not an advanced camera. Whenever I feel this is not enough, I prefer to use Nikon D5600. And a tripod is essential no matter whatever camera I'm carrying with me.

Feedback

Although sufficiently dark spots are usually difficult to find in a city, one can try creating a dark room inside closed spaces. Because even a subtle amount of unnecessary light may have an impact on the quality of the image.
