Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at a private horse barn in central Illinois on an usually warm day in November. I actually had another very curious horse behind me for this series of shots, and every once in a while I would feel his nose on my shoulder.

Time

I had driven an hour for this very impromptu session and had about 45 minutes before sundown. My client and her horse worked very quickly to get all the shots she wanted. The client's mother was there also, which was very helpful because she kept the other horses out of the shots as well as helping with props.

Lighting

I had been dreaming about this session for a while, so I had many images in my head that I wanted to capture. I shot in the golden hour, so you get this beautiful soft light that just enhances the subjects perfectly.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 80D f2.5 1/500 ISO-800 50mm lens

Inspiration

My client who is also a friend. She is very photogenic and we work very well together. I think it's so important to have a trust with your client - this makes it easier for me and for her to take excellent shots that she will have for a lifetime.

Editing

I often use several different types of software programs to get the look that I want. This shoot meant a lot to me because it had been percolating for quite a while. I had a lot of artistic freedom with this shoot.

In my camera bag

My Canon 80D with 10-18mm lens, 75-300mm lens, Rokinon 2.8/1.4 lens and my 50mm lens. I have no prime lenses, but one day I will!

Feedback

The best advice is have a vision in mind before you go. I talk with my clients about what they would like to see and then I get a vision before the shoot. It's best to trust your instincts and have an open mind. After all, you are the conduit to preserve a memory, so allow that spirit to move through you.
